San Ramon is located 35 miles east of San Francisco. It is a bustling urban area in Northern California that is flanked by Mount Diablo and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness. The city’s natural beauty and moderate year-round weather has inspired 72,000 people to move to the San Ramon Valley area and call it their home.
But what do all these people do for money? Not everyone can be a stay-at-home novelist or a comic book artist. Despite the statistics that more than 50% of people have home offices, a large number of people have to commute to work. Thankfully there are some companies in San Ramon that offer employment with competitive wages and career opportunities. According to the United States Census (2010), the median income per family in San Ramon is slightly over $132,000.
The corporate headquarters of Chevron Corporation (6001 Bollinger Canyon Road, 925-842-1000), and the west coast headquarters of AT&T Inc. (2600 Camino Ramon, (925) 824-7053) are both located in San Ramon. As such, both companies employ the largest amount of people in the area (nearly 20%).
Chevron is a huge energy company that does business around the globe. Over the years it has established itself as one of the world’s six major oil companies and is considered to be one of the 20 biggest companies in the world.
As a multinational communication entity, AT&T Inc. provides telephone, television and Internet services to a wide swath of customers. Various economic indicators and industry insiders list AT&T as the seventh largest company in the United States and one of the 20 biggest companies in the world.
San Ramon is also the home of 24-Hour Fitness (12647 Alcosta Blvd., 925-242-1424). While it doesn’t have the same global reach or financial might as Chevron and AT&T, it is an established iconic brand in the ever-expanding fitness industry. With gyms in the United States and Asia, 24-Hour Fitness is the third largest franchise of fitness clubs in the world.

Because San Ramon is a well-established urban area, it also contains a stable coterie of indigenous local businesses and a variety of civil service jobs. Many of the opportunities are linked to government parks, farming, public (and private) schools, tourism, media, restaurants, and food service. For a person with the right attitude and aptitude, San Ramon has a lot of career opportunities to offer. And don’t forget, if traffic congestion and toll bridges aren’t a problem, employment horizons expand ten-fold in nearby Berkeley, and San Francisco, and a little further in Silicon Valley.
